83-inch TV dimensions, viewing distance and mounting height
Exact screen size, real models, the right viewing distance and how high to hang it, worked out for a 83-inch TV.
A 83-inch TV’s picture is 72.3 inches wide and 40.7 inches tall. Current models are 72.5–75.2 in wide without the stand. Sit about 8 ft 3 in to 11 ft 3 in away, and mount it with the center of the screen about 42 inches from the floor.

How big is a 83-inch TV?
TV sizes are measured across the diagonal of the picture. For a 16:9 screen the width is 0.872 times the diagonal and the height 0.490 times, so a 83-inch screen is 72.3 × 40.7 inches (184 cm × 103 cm), with 20.4 square feet of picture.
Two things make a real set bigger than its screen. The frame: on the 4 current 83-inch models we list, the slimmest add almost nothing to the 72.3-inch picture width and the widest about 1.4 inches on each side. The stand adds height and, more importantly, depth. Some manufacturers also sell sets as a size “class”, with a measured diagonal slightly under the nominal size; the dimensions they print for the whole set are what matter for fit.
83 inches is an OLED size, like 77: LG, Samsung and Sony make large OLEDs at 83 inches because that is the size of the panels. If you want an OLED bigger than 77 inches, this is usually the next step.
It fills the recommended 30–40° of your view from about eight and a quarter to eleven and a quarter feet away, almost the same range as an 85-inch LCD.
Real 83-inch models are 72.5 to 75.2 inches wide and 41.5 to 44.2 inches tall without a stand. Stands differ: LG’s 83-inch C6 stand is about 18 inches wide, while Samsung’s S95H sits on feet about 50 inches apart.
Real 83-inch TVs, measured by their makers
Dimensions from each manufacturer’s US specification page, in inches. “Stand width” is how far apart the feet are, or the width of a pedestal, as the maker prints it; your console needs to be at least that wide. Two figures mean the feet fit in two positions; “narrow” means a stand under 40% of the TV’s width. Weight is without the stand; VESA is the wall-mount hole pattern in millimeters.
| Model | Panel | Without stand W × H × D | On stand H × D | Stand width | Weight VESA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LG 83" OLED evo AI C6 | OLED | 72.5 × 41.5 × 2.1 | 45 × 11.7 | 18.1 (narrow) | 62.4 lb 400 × 400 |
| Samsung 83" OLED S95H 4K | OLED | 75.2 × 44.2 × 1.1 | 46.1 × 14.5 | 49.9 | 89.3 lb 400 × 400 |
| LG 83" C5 OLED evo 4K TV | OLED | 72.5 × 41.5 × 2.1 | 45 × 11.7 | 18 (narrow) | — |
| Sony 83" BRAVIA 6 | OLED | — | 43 × 15.8 | 31.9 | 57.1 lb 400 × 400 |
Without stands, these sets vary by only 2.7 inches in width and are 1.1–2.1 in deep. On their stands the depth ranges from 11.7–15.8 in, which is what decides whether the TV fits on a shallow shelf.
How far to sit from a 83-inch TV
The useful measure is the viewing angle: how much of your view the picture fills. SMPTE’s reference viewing distance gives about 31–33°, and THX’s cinema guideline is 40°. For a 83-inch screen, that band runs from about 8 ft 3 in (40°) to 11 ft 3 in (30°), measured from your eyes to the screen.
| Guideline | Viewing angle | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum for 4K video (cited in CEDIA/CTA RP22) | 61° | 5 ft 1 in |
| THX cinema | 40° | 8 ft 3 in |
| SMPTE reference (3 to 3.2 picture heights) | 31–33° | 10 ft 2 in–10 ft 10 in |
| Edge of the recommended band | 30° | 11 ft 3 in |
| Relaxed TV watching (Samsung’s rule of thumb) | about 27° | 12 ft 7 in |
Resolution sets a second, closer limit. ITU-R BT.1845 and BT.2022 design viewing distances so that each pixel spans about one arcminute, roughly the limit of normal vision: 1.6 picture heights for 4K and 3.2 for 1080p. For a 83-inch screen that is about 5 ft 5 in for 4K and 10 ft 10 in for 1080p, so at normal sofa distances a 4K 83-inch set shows no visible pixel structure, while a 1080p set can look slightly soft if you sit at the near end of the band.

For a sofa, aim the center of the screen at seated eye height, about 42 inches from the floor (Samsung’s guidance for an average adult on a typical couch). For a 83-inch TV that puts the bottom edge of the picture about 22 inches from the floor and the top about 62 inches. That is lower than many consoles allow; in practice the screen sits a few inches above the console top, and a slightly higher center is fine.
If the TV has to go higher, THX suggests keeping your line of sight within 15° of the screen center. The further back you sit, the higher it can go:
| Eye-to-screen distance | Viewing angle | Highest center within 15° | Bottom edge at that height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft 6 in | 39°recommended | 69″ | 49″ |
| 10 ft | 34°recommended | 74″ | 54″ |
| 11 ft | 31°recommended | 77″ | 57″ |
| 13 ft | 26°small from here | 84″ | 63″ |
Over a fireplace, a 83-inch TV usually ends up with its center well above 60 inches, past 15° from typical seats, and manufacturers warn about heat. Our fireplace guide covers both.

- Wall: the screen is 72.3 inches wide; the set about 75.2. Leave some wall either side, especially next to windows or a door frame.
- Console: design guides suggest a console a few inches wider than the TV, roughly 74–78 inches for a 83-inch set. The hard minimum is the stand width: feet near the edges need almost the full width of the TV.
- Room depth: with the sofa against the back wall, your eyes end up about two feet in front of it. Sitting 8 ft 3 in to 11 ft 3 in from a wall-mounted screen needs a room about 11 ft 6 in to 14 ft 6 in deep, more if the TV stands on a console or there is a walkway behind the sofa (36 inches is the usual minimum, from NKBA’s planning guidelines).
- Suits: family rooms where the sofa is about eight and a quarter to eleven feet away.

Questions people ask
How wide is a 83-inch TV?
The picture of a 83-inch 16:9 TV is 72.3 inches (184 cm) wide. With the frame, the 4 current 83-inch models we list measure 72.5–75.2 inches wide.
How tall is a 83-inch TV?
The picture is 40.7 inches (103 cm) tall. Real 83-inch models are 41.5–44.2 inches tall without the stand and 43–46.1 inches on it.
How far should you sit from a 83-inch TV?
About 8 ft 3 in to 11 ft 3 in. At that distance the screen fills 30–40° of your view, the range SMPTE’s reference distance and THX’s cinema guideline span. Further back is fine for casual TV; closer than about 5 ft 1 in goes past the 61° maximum for 4K video that CEDIA/CTA RP22 cites.
How high should you mount a 83-inch TV?
Put the center of the screen near seated eye height, about 42 inches from the floor for a typical sofa. That puts the bottom edge about 22 inches up and the top about 62. If it has to go higher, keep the center within 15° of your eye line (THX): from 11 ft 3 in away that allows a center up to about 78 inches.
