Size comparison

50 vs 55-inch TV: how much bigger, and which fits your room

Both sizes from the same sofa, the difference in inches, and a simple rule for which one suits your seating distance.

The short answer50″ vs 55″

A 55-inch TV is 4.3 inches wider and 2.5 inches taller than a 50-inch, with 21% more picture. Sit closer than about 5 ft 6 in and the 50-inch is the comfortable size; further than about 6 ft 9 in and the 55-inch is; in between, both work.

Which size for your seating distance

Measure from where your eyes will be on the sofa to the TV wall. The viewing angle tells you how big each screen will look from there:

Recommended: 30–40° (SMPTE reference to THX cinema). 27–30° is relaxed and under 27° the picture looks small; over 40° it is immersive, and past 61° too close for most. An angle within half a degree of one of these edges shows a decimal, so it lands on the right side. The shaded row is the 7 ft seat in the pictures above.

How to choose

Only 4.4 inches separate these widths, and the screen area grows by about a fifth. In a bedroom or small living room where you sit around six to seven feet away, the 55-inch reaches the recommended band and the 50-inch sits just below it.

The 50-inch is the better fit on a narrow dresser or between closely spaced windows, and in a room where you sit five to six feet away.

Two practical checks come before the angle. Wall width: allow for the full set, not just the screen (real 55-inch models are 48.1–48.5 in wide). Stand width: if the TV goes on furniture, the feet or pedestal must fit on it; feet near the edges need a console almost as wide as the TV. The size guides list stand widths for real models: 50-inch and 55-inch.

Questions people ask

How much bigger is a 55-inch TV than a 50-inch?

The 55-inch picture is 4.3 inches wider and 2.5 inches taller, and 21% larger in area: 47.9 × 27 inches against 43.6 × 24.5.

Should I get a 50 or 55-inch TV for 7 feet?

From 7 feet, a 50-inch screen fills 29° of your view and a 55-inch 32°. The recommended band is 30–40°, so the 55-inch is the better fit.

At what distance does a 55-inch TV become too big?

It passes THX’s 40° cinema angle closer than about 5 ft 6 in, and the 61° maximum for 4K video that CEDIA/CTA RP22 cites closer than about 3 ft 5 in. Many people like a big screen for films and games; for everyday TV, 30–40° is the comfortable range.
